How to fit a real workout into 30 to 45 minutes

What to keep, what to cut and what to superset when you're short on time, so a 35-minute session still builds strength and muscle.

The meeting ran over. The commute was worse than usual. You’ve got 35 minutes, not 60. Most people do one of two things: skip the gym, or rush the whole plan and do everything badly. There’s a better option: a shorter session that keeps what matters.

Where the time actually goes

A set takes about 45 seconds. The rest after it takes 1 to 3 minutes. So most of a workout is rest, and the exercise list is what decides your time:

  • 4 sets of a big lift with 2.5 minutes’ rest: about 13 minutes
  • 3 sets of an accessory with 90 seconds’ rest: about 7 minutes
  • 3 sets of a small isolation move with a minute’s rest: about 5 minutes
  • Warm-up: about 5 minutes

A typical 6-exercise session lands around 55 to 65 minutes.

Cut in this order

Think of every exercise as one of three priorities:

  1. Main lifts: the first compound movement of the day (squat, bench, row, deadlift). This is where most of your progress comes from.
  2. Secondary lifts: other compound work (a second press, a lunge, a pulldown).
  3. Finishers: isolation and pump work (curls, raises, calf raises, core).

When time is short, cut from the bottom up:

  1. Drop the finishers first, starting with the last one.
  2. Cut secondary lifts to 2 sets. Two hard sets keep most of the benefit.
  3. Superset the secondaries that don’t compete, like a row with a lunge. Alternate them and rest after each pair. That saves several minutes.
  4. Only then trim the main lifts, and never below 3 sets.
  5. Never drop the first main lift. That’s the session.

Three quick templates

35 minutes, full body

  • Warm-up, 5 min
  • Squat or leg press: 3 × 6–10
  • Bench or dumbbell press: 3 × 6–10
  • Superset: row + Romanian deadlift, 2 rounds

30 minutes, upper

  • Warm-up, 5 min
  • Bench press: 3 × 6–10
  • Superset: lat pulldown + overhead press, 3 rounds
  • Superset: curl + triceps pushdown, 2 rounds

30 minutes, lower

  • Warm-up, 5 min
  • Squat: 3 × 6–10
  • Romanian deadlift: 3 × 8–10
  • Walking lunge: 2 × 10 each leg

Don’t rush the rest on main lifts

It’s tempting to cut rest everywhere. Don’t on the big lifts: short rest there means lighter weights and less progress. Save time by cutting exercises and supersetting accessories, not by sprinting through your heaviest sets.

A short session still counts

Strength and muscle respond to hard sets over weeks, not to any single perfect workout. Three good 35-minute sessions beat one 90-minute session and two skipped days, every time.
