Overweight
What BMI tells you, and what it doesn't
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It's a quick screen used worldwide, and for most people it lines up reasonably with body fat.
| Category | WHO | Asian cut-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Under 18.5 | Under 18.5 |
| Healthy | 18.5–24.9 | 18.5–22.9 |
| Overweight | 25–29.9 | 23–24.9 |
| Obese | 30 and over | 25 and over |
People of Asian descent tend to carry more health risk at the same BMI, which is why many health bodies use the lower cut-offs.
Where it falls short: BMI can't tell muscle from fat. A muscular lifter can read "overweight" while being lean. That's why your waist matters: keeping it under half your height is a simple, well-supported target.
